India was home to a major number of undernourished communities in the world even the incidence of Covid-19 pandemic. Even though we are the largest stocking nation for grain in the world 120 million tonnes as of July 1, 2021 our country holds the dubious record for a quarter of the world s food-insecure population. Despite being self-sufficient in the production of major food commodities, problems of hunger and food insecurity are grave in India because of widespread economic distress, high unemployment, ineffective distribution channels and high levels of inequality. Majority of the population is dependent on the informal economy in which incomes are too low and uncertain as the employment in formal sectors are scarce. Since the onslaught of Covid-19, unemployment rates have scaled new heights, compounding the distress among working classes and the peasantry. With low and uncertain incomes, families dependent on the informal economy do not have assured access to adequate and nutritious food. With low and uncertain incomes, families dependent on the informal economy do not have assured access to adequate and nutritious food. The pandemic has only aggravated this longstanding problem (Bansal, 2021), and it has further worsened the nutritional status of the country and India s poor and hungry are being affected the most. Children were not getting their share of mid-day meal from the schools during pandemic as every educational institution in the country had been closed. Further, the Supplementary Nutrition for ICDS projects in rural areas through Anganwadi Centers has also been disrupted to a great extent. Effective nutritional intervention forms the key component in combating the multifaceted nutritional concern including triple burden of malnutrition(under nutrition, overweight/obesity and hidden hungeror micronutrient deficiencies) coupledwith non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Indian scenario.Maternal and child malnutrition and anaemia remain the leading factors for health loss in India.
