Abstract: The study highlights the changing attitude and approach of the government towards the policies and programmes of skill development and using skill development as a tool to bring in rural sustainable development. The study aims to provide an insight into various initiatives taken by the government to provide skill development programmes in India and specifically in Jharkhand. It also highlights the issues related to achievements and failures and the challenges faced in implementing these programmes. The study may be considered as a tool of knowledge management that can help in setting a parameter by the government in opting and implementing any further project or policy for skill development. The study provides all the positive aspects of a programme to be followed in future and will also highlight the shortcomings and negative aspects to be avoided and will help in finding means and ways to overcome these challenges so that the policy makers should come up with a programme of skill development that should be more effective and appropriate in fighting the problems of unemployment and rural sustainable development in nation and in the state of Jharkhand. newline newlineSome key variables such as the physical wellbeing, education, self-employment and employability have been taken into account to find out how it has impacted the skilled and semi-skilled workforce of the state. The various traditional skills inherent to Jharkhand have also been included as these skills would be very significant in changing the skill scenario in the state. Also the skill development and training programmes should be given a wide coverage by encouraging the public private partnership. Self employment and entrepreneurship projects should be promoted through funding and marketing supports by the governments. The focus should also be given to the unorganized sector and make the campaign of Kaushal Bharat, Kushal Bharat successful. newline newline
