Abstract: | newline Dos Passos lived almost entirely in his writing. He was, above all, a newlinewriter. The biographer looking for high drama, scandal, stimulating gossip, newlinecomes away almost empty-handed. Even the once mildly shocking story of newlineDos Passos parentage now rests quietly among the vital statistics. Yet to newlineknow the man and the work is as rewarding an experience as American newlineliterature has to offer. The author of Manhattan Transfer and the vast newlineU.S.A. trilogy are works that continue to vibrate with remarkable creative newlineenergy; the person, John Dos Passos, left the simple but invaluable image newlineof a good man concerned about his society, worried about its future. newlineWhat emerges from his books is that Dos Passos was an intelligent, newlinethoughtful man of letters who agonized about his politics. His stance, once newlinehe had turned right represents that of a substantial, now powerful group of newlineAmericans - he is considered a mainstream Republican now - and his newlinesorrow about his chosen country was akin to that of the literally millions of newlinehis countrymen on the left and on the right, who have despaired about their newlinedemocracy. A sense of hopelessness was abroad in the land during the last newlinedecade of his life; many American feared then - and still fear - that little of newlinenothing can be done to stem technological growth; the government, which newlinethey once believed was them, now seemed impersonal and unresponsive. newlineBut taken all in all, his work still speaks to the issues before mankind and newlinethat is not an insignificant achievement. |
