Abstract: With the reinvigoration in the interest of using natural textile dyes, a solution must be found that will overcome the limitations of traditional natural dyes. This solution must also be free from toxicity for both humankind and the environment than synthetic dyes. The present study is aimed to evaluate and optimize the dyeing capacity of pigment extracted from two commonly found fungi- Penicillium biliae and Talaromyces australis on cotton fabric. Both the fungi were isolated from soil. In the present study, the molecular identification of fungi producing red pigment was identified as Talaromyces australis while the yellow pigment producing fungi was identified as Pencillium bilaiae. Both the yellow and Red pigment extracted on PDB was evaluated by dyeing on cotton fabric. The effect of process parameters of dyeing was carried out by various methods like dye staining technique which was subjected to three different pH-5,7 and 9 and two types of mordants before testing the dyeing capability of fungal pigments. Ferrous sulphate and alum were the mordants used for the test. The dyed fabric was then tested for colour fastness properties like light fastness, perspiration fastness and rubbing fastness. The result showed that the yellow pigment showed excellent colour fastness in terms of all three properties when compared to red pigment. The wet rubbing fastness showed moderate stability for both the pigments. newline
