Abstract: The thesis entitled Surveillance of Groundwater Quality in Thanjavur Block and Development of Household Level Iron Removal System is structured into five chapters including summary of the work. newlineThe conventional Iron removal system uses the following methods . newline(i) Aeration and filtration newline(ii) Adsorption newline(iii) Ion-exchange newline(iv) Electrochemical method and newline(v) Membrane Technique newlineAmong the above , aeration and filtration is the most popular, proven method for Iron removal. In the present work , the primary objective is to develop a Household Level Iron Removal System newlineThe basic scope of present work is groundwater sample collection and testing for its physical and chemical characteristics including statistical interpretation with preparation of geo-spatial maps using GIS tools. The other part of the objectives constitutes, the synthesis of different forms of activated carbons from peel off waste of lemon, orange and mozambi, characterization and evaluation of their for-iron removal capacity besides the influence of different parameters on the deferrization process. newlineThe application-oriented aim of present research work is Design, fabrication, installation of aeration and filtration based, low cost community level Iron removal system for a small. community level newlineThe ultimate reach being Design, fabrication, installation of aeration and filtration based on locally available material at low cost for a household level iron removal filter including preparation of indigenous filter candle .The laboratory studies are generally aimed at in developing a process that could be of field-oriented use. The deferrization method under study has to be ultimately triedin one of the most affected areas. The success of its implementation will depend on some of the input parameters specific to that area that have direct bearing on the iron level. Hence, groundwater quality data of 220 bore wells dispersed over Thanjavur block were collected from the data bank of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board.
