dc.description.abstract | Abstract: Water sustains life, the growth of population and their impact in every sphere of development viz., Agriculture, industry and urbanization are depended primarily on water resources leading to ever increasing demands of water. Increasing demands over exploitation of ground water resources and in efficiency of tapping the surface runoff water created an imbalance resulting into dearth of water availability to have sustained food production and eco development. newlineIndia is the agricultural country. The fruits of Green Revolution now we taste are confined to irrigated area only. There are few vast areas left unused because of poor irrigational facilities. To plan at micro level Sustainable Watershed Management is the buzzword today for environmental planning specifically water and agricultural resources. The success of planning for developmental activities depends on the quality and quantity of the information available on both natural resources and socio-economic setup. Remote sensing is the most advanced technology that provides huge information on natural resources such as crop, land-use, soils, forests etc spatially and temporally. GIS is the most appropriate technique not only in capturing and manipulating but also in the analysis of the data, such information is vital input in the watershed management. There is essential to use the advanced computerised systems to handle such huge data. 76% of the world population had water availability of less than 5,100 cubic metric per annum percapita and it is predicted that in 2030 most of earth s population will be living under low newlinewater supply (source:International resource panel(IRP)). It is projected that the situation of water user categories in the world will not shift much expecting increase in water consumption due urbanisation in the developing countries. To address water wastage, water use efficiency measures are advocated and for water shortage, the infrastructure gap through watershed approach has been carried out. | |
