Abstract: Optical networks have emerged as a promising candidate for the nextgeneration newlinecommunication networks Enabling packet switching in the optical newlinedomain can provide cost efficient and transparent transport services to end newlineusers A commercial deployment of optical network requires detailed newlineinvestigation of a number of networking challenges related to data newlinetransmission such as imprecise bandwidth demand per subscriber basis and its newlineassociated cost In addition optical networks are required to support newlinedifferentiated Quality of Service QoS and accommodate multiple service newlineproviders that emerged made this problem very challenging newlineConsidering optical network the major problems are to devise a novel newlinerouting algorithm to allocate bandwidth for multimedia streams to optimize newlinethe usage of network resources in order to maximize the amount of traffic it newlinecan carry and to support high data transmissions, guarantees less number of newlinerejections bandwidth delay jitter and reliability newlineThe proposed tree pruning algorithm enables us to determine the newlinenumber of paths needed to accommodate all of the user s requests to utilize newlinethe available bandwidth according to the currently accessible traffic the newlinealgorithm significantly improves the blocking performance improves the newlineoverall QoS This thesis presents a multimedia traffic routing algorithm that newlineallows a central terminal to dynamically allocate upstream bandwidth for newlineremote terminals Next critical issue in optical networks is the packet loss newlineresolved by the proposed Hash based scheduling algorithm that allows newlinereconstruction of lost data packets by enabling redundant packets added into newlinethe optical buffer The prevailing multimedia applications need a MAC newlineprotocol to execute all traffic types unvaryingly newline newline
