Abstract: | newline Vector borne diseases like malaria and filariasis rank amongst the newlineworld s most important parasitic disease affecting millions of people in tropical and newlinesubtropical regions. Insecticide based interventions for vector control are the main newlineplanks of the anti-malaria campaign in India and have so far remained largely newlineeffective for disease management. Insecticides of different classes namely newlineorganochlorine, organophosphate and synthetic pyrethroids are in use in vector newlinecontrol programme in India. Due to continued use of these insecticides, the vector newlinespecies in India have developed multiple resistances to these insecticides. newlineDevelopment of insecticide resistance in malaria vector has been a major impediment newlinefor needed efficacy of the insecticides for vector control. The vector control newlineinterventions constitute an important component of the global malaria control newlinestrategy. In India, indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides and use of long newlinelasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in addition to larviciding in urban areas are the main newlinevector control strategies to control malaria and other vector borne diseases. newlineEffectiveness of these tools under operational conditions is hampered by a number of newlinefactors including the development of insecticide resistance. An in-depth newlineunderstanding of the basis of the insecticide resistance could help in judicious use of newlinepublic health pesticides and better vector management. |
