dc.description.abstractTransport connectivity is essential for access to work, health, education etc. It is very newlineimportant to provide access to transport infrastructure and services to various sections of newlinesociety. The gap in transport infrastructure and service creates inequity in the society. newlineTherefore, it is very important to address equity concerns in transport system of urban newlineareas like Greater Mumbai. Equity is justice in provision of transport infrastructure and newlineservices to all sections of the society. It is a broader concept and can have lot of newlinedimensions. This thesis will address these dimension of inequity between modes of newlinetransport predominately used by poor and non poor, overall sustainability, relative newlineinequity, inter and intra ward inequity and inequity in investment in transport and newlineinfrastructure in case of Greater Mumbai. newlineIn India very less work has been done in terms of addressing equity aspects of newlinetransportation. Based on literature, set of research questions were identified and were newlineaddressed in each chapter. newlineThe quality of public transportation has not improved making it an unpleasant experience newlineto travel by public transport in Greater Mumbai. This has led to increase in usage of newlinepersonal vehicles leading to congestion and increase in energy demand and newlineenvironmental emissions. Therefore, it is important to understand the impact of increase newlinein motor vehicles on energy demand and environmental emissions.
