Abstract: | The 21st century began by heralding a phenomenal paradigm in information technology. The dawn of cloud computing saw mankind move towards a direction that could not have been possibly envisaged in the manner so apparent and readily accepted by young and old alike as it is today in evidence. And yet, the ubiquitous presence and effects of cloud computing has almost inured us to the point where we have accepted it as such to be a piece of technology as useful as it is and yet turned mundane as the humble spreadsheet programs that sit on our desktops, laptops and mobiles. The world around us deluges us with data and information every second. It is not uncommon nor unlikely that billions of bytes of information are processed and transmitted every day around the world. newlineWhile the early part of the 21st century could yet be said to belong to the microprocessors, laptops, and desktops, in the last few years of this decade the world has witnessed the rise of mobile devices of many difference specifications with each offering processing power that even modern laptops and desktops would be hard-pressed to overcome. In such a backdrop, the question of utilizing energy and the most efficient manner possible given the spate of use of mobiles and cloud data centers (CDCs) supporting the information network for turning mobiles into powerful tools and entertainment devices, becomes utterly relevant. newlineThe number of mobiles currently in the hands of millions of people across the world today demands careful research and examination into the negative effects that it may have on our environment. Such as it is, consumption of energy without appropriate control invariably results in producing harmful greenhouse gases. On the hand, the measurement of energy consumption, however, needs to be put in perspective of efficiency and convenience accorded by mobiles. Therefore, it is necessary to examine various related points involving communications, load balancing, cloud storage, virtual machine environments, regional data center. |
