dc.description.abstract | Social Economic and demographic profile of the district of Jhabua: newlineOut of its total population, India has 8.6 % of the ST population. Out of its total population, MP has 21 % of the ST population. Out of its total population, Jhabua has 87 % of the ST population, making it a predominantly a tribal district. More than 91 % of the total population lives in villages, while 97 % of the tribal population lives in villages. The economy of the district is primarily based on agriculture which largely depends on rainfalls. The bamboo products and decorative items like dolls, bead-jewellery are the source of livelihood for a lot of people in tribal areas. The bow and arrow, a symbol of chivalry among the tribals, is used for hunting animals on the one hand, and for self-defence on the other. The district is extremely poor. Nearly 60% of its population is the below poverty line, against the 36.7 % of population of MP living below the poverty line (BPL). By way of political governance, India comprises 28 States and seven Union Territories. Madhya Pradesh is one of the States situated in the heartland of the Country. It has fifty districts.
