Abstract: | The present study was undertaken to highlight the invasive potential of Verbesina encelioides pertaining to its ecology, phenology, and functional biology. The role of ecological and biological attributes which imparts invasiveness to this weed was ascertained. The attempts were also made to explore the germination behavior of the plant and its ecological impact on the resident species of invaded ecosystem. Based on the findings of present research, it could be surmised that V. encelioides holds the potential to become a noxious invader. Intensive field studies are required to check its distribution, spread, and impact on the native vegetation. It is also suggested to determine the extent of phenotypic adaptations in V. encelioides in different geographical regions so as to estimate its response to changing environmental conditions. Complete profiling of allelochemicals exuded by the weed is required so as to assess its toxicity towards important commercial crops and other useful plants. Lastly, it is proposed that needful steps should be taken to provide a solid management framework for V. encelioides to prevent any further spread of the weed. newline |
