dc.description.abstractnewline Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of branched chain newlineamino acid on muscle mass, muscle strength, albumin synthesis, combined survival, newlinephysical performance and maintenance of liver function changes in laboratory and newlineprognostic markers, frailty, health related quality of life and hospital admission in newlinesarcopenic patients with liver cirrhosis. newlineMethods: A 24-week, single-centre, randomized, open-label, controlled, two cohort newlineparallel-group intervention study was conducted to check the efficacy of BCAAs newlineand L-albumin on 106 sarcopenic patients with liver cirrhosis. The BCAA group newlinewas treated with 10g BCAA per dose, whereas the L-albumin group was treated newlinewith 10g of L-albumin. Comparison was done among both the groups, to assess the newlinemuscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, albumin synthesis, frailty and newlinehealth-related quality of life (HRQoL) by using anthropometric parameters, disease newlinespecific HRQoL questionnaire and other laboratory and prognostic markers on newlinesarcopenic patients with liver cirrhosis. First assessment was done on 7th and 15thday newlineof initial treatment and subsequent reviews done in 1 month interval, up to 3 months. newlineResults: Supplementation with BCAA significantly improved the nutritional newlineparameters as well as sarcopenic parameters including muscle mass, muscle newlinestrength, muscle function, and frailty. The need for hospitalization and the hospital newlineadmission rate decreased significantly in the group treated with BCAA in newlinecomparison to L-ALB that improved prognostic markers and patients HRQoL. newlineConclusion: In advanced cirrhosis, oral, long-term supplementation with BCAA newlinewas helpful in preventing progressive hepatic failure, improving prognosis, newlinenutritional markers and health related quality of life. Keywords: Branched chain amino acid, liver cirrhosis, sarcopenia, prognosis, newlineHRQoL
