Abstract: Road is the predominant mode of Transport for every Indian citizen. Because of its flexibility newlinenature, it ensures connectivity of all villages with big cities. Roads offer door to door service newlineand their construction is vital to the economic development, trade and social integration. newlineIndia has one of the largest road networks in the world. Irrespective of the different modes newlineof transport, Road transport is vital to the economic development and social integration of newlinethe country, owing to its flexibility in reaching to all the parts of the country and its cost. Easy newlineaccessibility, flexibility of operations, door-to-door service and reliability have earned road newlinetransport an increasingly higher share of both passenger and freight traffic vis-a-vis other newlinetransport modes. The growth of Vehicular traffic in India is exponential which warranted newlinemany improvement to the existing road network. Out of total length of 33.00 lakhs Kms newlinein India, the existing National Highways is of only 2 percent, which has to cater 40 % newlineof total highway traffic. Hence, Government of India is implementing many schemes for newlineimproving the existing National Highways by widening to four/six lanes based on the traffic newlinein the above roads through National Highways Authority of India under the guidance of newlineMinistry of Road Transport and Highways. Steps are also taken by Government of India newlineto develop the other categories of the roads in India by various schemes such as Central newlineRoad Infrastructure Development Program, Central Road Fund and Prathaan Manthri Grama newlineSadak Yojana Schemes through concerned state Governments. newline
