Abstract: The objective of this research is to study the influence of lignin on ultraviolet (UV) protection, comfort and some other functional properties of textiles. newlineThe present study gives detailed idea about influence of lignin on UV protection behavior of textiles. This study covered natural lignin present in Sesbania aculeate as well as application of lignin on cellulosic fiber like cotton and synthetic fiber like nylon 6. This work has been made to find out the effect of substrate variables and process parameters on the protection of UV radiation across the lignin based textiles. The performance characteristics of the lignin based textiles for UV protection have been reported. newlineThe effect of natural lignin on the performance of Sesbania Aculeata /Jute fiber blended woven fabric for enhancing ultra-violet (UV) protection ability and other functional aspects have been investigated. The Sesbania aculeatefiber which is having natural lignin of 19.01 % is blended with Jute which is another ligno-cellulosic fiber containing lignin of 11.08 %. Yarns of different linear density, viz. 300 tex, 450 tex and 600 tex of various blends of Jute/Sesbania aculeate (90:10, 80:20 and 70:30) are used as weft of woven fabric to prepare three different levels of picks density viz. 32, 40 and 48 picks/dm. These independent parameters (variables) are optimized by using three factors of three levels Box and Behnken design by response surface methodology. The results show that the increase in Sesbania aculeate fiber content, yarn thickness, and pick density increase UPF, drying rate, and thermal conductivity of the prepared fabrics. The UPF is achieved as high as 92.68 with 29.4 % Sesbania aculeate fiber content. The characteristics of ligno-cellulosic Jute and Sesbania aculeate fibers are investigated by FTIR. This research work clearly established the new application of Sesbania aculeate fiber in the field of textiles for UV protection and thermal comfort behavior of fabric. newline
