Abstract: newlineAluminum metal matrix composites Al MMCs are finding greater newlineutility in automobile and aerospace industries Significant features of Al newlineMMCs that draw huge attention are considerable reduction in mass, its newlineprominence in engine parts enhanced material properties in terms of strength newlineand stiffness improved lubrication characteristics wear resistance reduced newlinethermal expansion coefficient etc This positive facet of Al MMCs increases newlinecomponent durability and permits applications in extreme service conditions newlineTo boost up the application of aluminum MMCs in realtime applicationsit is newlineessential to weld these specimens to other engineering materialsThere are newlineseveral research works reporting the lacuna in arc welding of dissimilar newlinealuminumsteel joints viz preferential melting of the aluminum alloy and newlineformation of brittle iron aluminum intermetallics However friction welding newlineprocess illustrates positive sign for its employment to join dissimilar newlinealuminum steel Conversely intermetallic formation is still of concern newlineConsequently to overcome this prevailing problem interlayers are introduced newlinein this study newlineAt first dissimilar 6061 T6 Aluminum MMC and AISI 304 newlineStainless Steel friction welds were experimented with and without the newlinepresence of silver interlayer for conceptual understanding and to clarify and newlineconfirm the phenomenal terminologies based on literature From this newlineexperimental work it is observed that the introduction of silver interlayer newlinedecreases co efficient of friction and heat generation newline newline
