Abstract: | The tasks done by the press are key in making a democratic culture that goes beyond system of politics and overtime gets engraved in the consciousness of the citizens. The press provides the political information that citizens leverage their actions upon. They figure out the troubles in our society and act as a channel for repletion. They also act as surveillance that assists us to uncover problems and mistakes made by the Government in power. The tasks of the press in a democracy are key comparable to that of the elected representatives and should not be undermined. The presence of an independent, free and robust press is essential for a democracy, especially in a nation such as India. It is not just a vehicle to express one s belief but also it is a robust tool for fabricating views and opinions about varied issues about regional, national or even international interests. Therefore, the key task of the press is its capability to muster the thinking process of millions. It is the way by which people get uninterrupted flow of ideas and information, which is required for clever self-governance, which is, democracy. Besides, the press plays an important part in not only summoning opinions of the public but also to illuminate the injustices so that they don t go unnoticed. A liberated press acts as a major interpreter among the Government and the citizens. The power and importance of the media in a democracy is well known. The fabricators of the Constitution grant the press with immense freedom. This aforementioned freedom is considered as a corner stone to the foundation of a powerful independent media occasionally coined as the Fourth Estate . newlineThe past of the press in India is the history of the expanding attenuating its liberty, despite of little alterations.
