Abstract: | Fossil fuel related environmental degradation should be minimized to prevent habitat loss. Renewable energy successfully reduced the carbon emissions in the last decade, but could not able to replace the fossil fuels due to its intermittent supply. Batteries having high energy density could store renewable energy for industrial and electric vehicle applications. The discovery of Li-ion battery and its advancements over the years made them an irreplaceable powering source for portable electronic devices. The developments were mainly focused on the cathode, as it is the deciding factor in the battery s energy density. The transition from LiCoO2 to Ni-rich cathodes successfully increased the specific capacity of cathode from 140 to 200 mAh.g-1, but a suitable cathode that matches the driving ranges of internal combustion engines is not yet developed. newline |
