Abstract: | Excessive generation of free radicals in a biological system causes newlineoxidative stress which leads to oxidative injury and disease Use of natural newlineantioxidants derived from plants especially polyphenolic flavonoids has newlinearoused considerable interest nowadays in lieu of their contribution along newlinewith antioxidant enzymes and vitamins to the total antioxidant defense newlinemechanism of the human body In the present study medicinal plants from newlinethe foot hills of Western Ghats are screened and three of the plants newline Rhynchosia capitata Crotalaria globosa and Delonix elata are scrutinized newlineand examined for its phytochemical profile using high pressure thin layer newlinechromatographic technique HPTLC newlineSimultaneous extraction with 95 aqueous ethanol aq EtOH and newlinefractionation using solvents of increasing polarity such as n hexane benzene newline C6H6 and ethyl acetate EtOAc of the powdered leaves and roots of R newlineCapitata C globosa leaves and flowers of D elata are carried out The newlineaq EtOH extract is used for quantification of polyphenolics such as newlineflavonoids tannins and proanthocyanidin content From the above studies it newlineis observed that R capitata leaves possess highest total flavonoid content and newlinethe number of individual flavonoids present is also high in number Hence newlinefurther studies on isolation are carried out using R capitata leaves newline |
