The rising global energy demand, the exhaustion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution makes Microgrids (MGs) inevitable in the present era. MGs are mini power systems that are powered by several distributed generators (DGs) which electrify a defined local area. The MGs can function together with the main grid or independent of the main grid. The operation of MG independent of the main grid is called the autonomous mode of operation. newlineThe autonomous mode of MG operation has revolutionized the electrical power system since it ensures a reliable and uninterrupted power supply. Nevertheless, the operation of MG in the grid-independent autonomous mode presents problems with islanding detection, protection, security, reverse power flow, voltage and frequency variations, stability, harmonics, power sharing and economic operation. Hence, the operation of MG in the autonomous mode calls to address several challenges due to the absence of the main grid newline
