Abstract: BACKGROUND: Hyperlipidaemias refer to presence of increased amounts of lipids in the blood and a decrease in high density lipoproteins. It is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. At present this condition isin increasing scenario among Indians due to westernisation in food habits and life style. In this present study Ayurvedic formulation Sookshma eladi choornam indicated in Hridroga prakarana of Bhaishajya Ratnavali was selected to evaluate its efficacy in treating hyperlipidaemias and to compare its efficacy with control drug Atorvastatin. OBJECTIVE: This study was done to know the effect of Sookshma eladi choornam in hyperlipidaemias in comparison with modern drug Atorvastatin. METHODS: 100 adults with hyperlipidaemia participated in a randomized, open labelled, controlled, parallel group study. For subjects in trail group (n=50), Sookshma eladi choornam was given and for subjects in control group (n=50), standard drug Atorvastatin was given for 12 weeks. The main outcome measures like lipid profile, Medoroga clinical score (MCS), BMI and AIP were evaluated after 12 weeks. A follow up study was also conducted to know the sustained effect of both the drugs after one month. RESULTS: Sookshma eladi choornam and Atorvastatin had shown significant results in all subjective and objective parameters. After 12 weeks of treatment there were significant declines in mean from baseline. The mean score differences (trial versus control) on TC (83.96 +/- 7.434 versus 71.32+/-6.387; plto.ooo1), TGL (114.19+/- versus 107.96+/-8.435: plto.ooo1), LDL (74.58 +/- 7.952 versus 59.66 +/- 6.583; plto.ooo1), VLDL (33.350+/- 10.542 versus 21.570+/- 1.688; plto.oo1). For HDL there was significant incline in mean from baseline observed. The mean score difference observed on HDL was (10.88 +/- 0.636 versus 9.98 +/- 0.923; plto.ooo1).
