Abstract: | The present dissertation entitled Power Discourse in Amitav Ghosh s Select newlineNovels: A Foucauldian Reading aims to map out the discourse of power/knowledge newlineand its practice in cultural and socio-political fields with its dynamic and diversive newlineflow in Amitav Ghosh s select novels such as The Calcutta Chromosome, The Circle newlineof Reason, The Glass Palace and The Hungry Tide. It shows how various characters newlineof Ghosh s novels get entangled in the complex field of discourse which Foucault newlineviews as discursive practices . The Calcutta Chromosome shows simultaneous newlinepresentation of scientific practice and practice of pseudo-science in the field of newlinescientific discourse where the practice of pseudo-science represented by Mangala and newlineLakhaan challenges main-stream of science. The Circle of Reason implies Ghosh s newlinecritique towards the rigidity of Western science through the character of Balaram who newlinehas given an indigenous touch to hybridise the western scientific practice. The Glass newlinePalace tracks the course of power at different levels firstly, the power of newlinesovereignty, secondly, the colonial and ideological power of British Raj and thirdly, newlinethe power of nation-state. The Hungry Tide has displayed the uprising and practice of newlinepower through his suggestive implication of the tide country where history reveals the newlinepower-struggle by means of knowledge and the terrible incident of Morichjhapi newlineMassacre. It is evident that the flow of power in Ghosh s novels is not linear; rather it newlinevaries in different degrees. It is viewed that in some novels of Ghosh, the flow of newlinepower is from top to bottom; in some novels, the flow of power is from bottom to top newline newlinewith the spirit of resistance. The dissertation aims to focus mainly on the implication newlineof Foucaudian power-discourse in Ghosh s novels. newline |
