Mapping Media Education in Universities of Eastern India

Abstract

newline The journey of media education in Eastern India has completed seven decades of its existence. newlineHowever, the discipline has witnessed expansion during last two decades with the birth of new newlinemedia departments in public as well as private universities. But, in absence of a clear media newlineeducation policy framework, the discipline has grown up by force of circumstances thereby newlineleading for haphazard development and the discourse for streamlining the discipline has been in newlineexistence since its inception. newlineThis research explores evolution and development of the media education in West Bengal, newlineOdisha, Bihar and Jharkhand and also examines its current status by investigating various newlinequalitative components such as media departments, educators, programs, research, publication, newlineinfrastructure, production and academia-industry interface. Further, a comparative analysis of newlinemedia education based on above components has also been done among states in Eastern India. newlineFor the purpose, the study undertakes exploratory research design in which both qualitative and newlinequantitative research approaches have been integrated. Survey method for investigating all 29 newlineuniversity-level media departments that offers master program in Eastern India has been done newlinethrough personal visit. The data has been collected through tools of questionnaire and in-depth newlineinterviews of senior most and experienced faculties, who hold the charge as dean, head, newlinecoordinator and/or full time or part time regular faculties in the department.
