The Present research work aims at filling a void in the Indian history of late 18th and early 19th century by rediscovering and highlighting the presence and influence of the French nation in India. The Study also explores the ideological logics of expansion of the British company in India. It aims to reveal fresh dimensions of Anglo-French rivalry, Franco-Awadh, Franco-Maratha relations and Franco- Mysore alliance. newlineThe proposed study assesses the political and military presence of the French in India after Seven years war and underlines the efforts put in by the French government to re-establish themselves in India as a major political power. British East India Company s response to all such plans and alliances also forms a part of the study. newlineTill early 19th century, in the isolated pockets of the country French remained an influential factor and rose to prominence at a few places. These administrators and adventurers forwarded major projects and plans to the French government in Paris henceforth. At the same time some French military officers rose to such higher military ranks and commanded so much political clout that they became a source of envy and cause of worry for British authorities. Many of the British company s actions, especially during the late 18th and early 19th century, were directed to contain the increasing French influence in Indian political scenario. newlineThe present research concludes that post 1763 French presence and influence did not end in India as the common notion is. Rather, they remained a potent threat to EIC. But the ambitions of arresting the expansion of English power were not met by their resources. French lacked the means and resources for war against English in Indian continents and completely depended upon the Indian allies money and men for avenging their humiliation and ousting the English from India. newline newline
