The unhealthy socio-economic parameters in Odisha, one of the backward states of India, the newlinepresent study focuses upon the important livelihood diversification strategy of the rural poor in newlinethe Bolangir and Nuapada districts. In the study area, distress migration from the rural areas has newlinebecome a principal livelihood strategy of the poor and has soared up during the postglobalization period due to phenomenal growth of the informal sector in the peripheries of the newlinecities. The key aim of this thesis is to analyse distress migration in rural Odisha exploring the newlinevarious dimensions of the phenomenon in the Boalangir and Nuapada districts in particular with newlinethe help of an empirical study. The phenomenon of distress migration in the study area is newlineexamined within the contexts of the status of livelihood in the study area, which includes the newlineemployment in the rural employment sector as well as the livelihood generation through newlinegovernment intervention and the absorption of rural unskilled labourers in the informal sectors in newlinethe cities and their peripheries. The study takes cognizance of the key but relevant provisions of newlinethe labour laws, particularly designed for the migrants while evaluating livelihood in the newlineinformal sector. newline
