Abstract: Synthetic dyes have been increasingly used in the textile paper, rubber plastic cosmetics pharmaceutical and food industries because of their newlineease of use inexpensive cost of synthesis stability and variety of colourcompared with natural dyes Today there are more than 10000 dyes available newlinecommercially most of which are difficult to biodegrade due to their complexaromatic molecular structure and synthetic origin The extensive use of dyes newlineoften poses pollution problems in the form of coloured wastewater discharge newlineinto environmental water bodies which interferes with transmission ofsunlight into streams therefore reduces photosynthetic activity In addition newlinesome dyes or their metabolites are either toxic or mutagenic and carcinogenic newline newline
