Abstract: | The latest developments in science and technology have led to the development and deployment of robots in various applications covering all spheres of the human life. This necessitates the interaction of humans with robots on a larger scale. Past evidence suggests that robots are considered more as companions rather than machines/tools. However, Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is not same as already existing Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI), that provides insights in understanding and improving interactions with computer based technologies. HRI takes a cue from HCI by introducing autonomy, physical proximity and ability to take decisions for a robotic system that makes HRI a distinct area for research. Taking into consideration the huge number of interactions between human and robots, there is a stringent requirement to standardize protocols to ensure the usage of robotic technology in a responsible and principled way. This research work illustrates an HRI framework and metric taxonomies (derived through detailed review of literature) for the robot design suitable for various applications. The framework presents an end-to-end product design overview for hobbyists, developers and researchers, who are interested in creating a fully-autonomous, consumer-focused social robots with perception and reasoning capabilities, which can further be utilized to achieve technology readiness for an end-product. newlineAs investment in robotics domain is bringing diversity of robots in the consumer market that will lead to an exponential increase in the interactions between humans and robots. Consumers with diverse expectations and limited domain knowledge, often finds it difficult to select a suitable robot. The HRI framework enables consumers to develop a general vocabulary about various technical terms associated with robots, and informs about the key factors to consider while selecting a robot. This makes the selection process easier and efficient for consumers. In order to illustrate the utility of factors deduced from the framework, |
