Abstract: Domestic Violence is a problem which exists in our country since ages and has always been a part of our Indian society. The root cause of gender inequality is the patriarchal system which exists in our society. It is the result of several precipitating factors along with some sort of instigation. Though, it has more serious manifestations in our present society as the nature of domestic violence substantially changed due to the process of modernization and technological development. Violence against women seriously violates Human Rights and is presumed as a social issue. The Indian Government is making a lot of efforts to eliminate domestic violence from the society. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 is a legislation which aims to provide protection to women from violence in domestic relationship. Domestic violence against women in the light of theoretical explanations reflects that it is a multifaceted problem. Therefore this study within the framework of Multifactor theory has focused on more than one perspective to understand domestic violence. The study analysis different forms of domestic violence based on the judgments of some of the decided cases. On the basis of extensive fieldwork consisting of observations and personal interviews with the concerned parties (i.e. both husband and wife) in the ongoing cases, the study highlights on the present status of women through relevant indicators such as income, religion and ruralurban residence etc. The study also analysis the role of legal functionaries through questionnaires, personal interviews and discussions in order to identify the factors affecting their work performances. The analysis depicts disparity between the wonderfully crafted provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 on one hand and the ground reality captured through empirical research on the other. newline
