Status and problems of music education in Kerala at school level

Abstract

The early days of formal schooling have given prime importance to music education as newlineemphasised in the published recommendations of various committees and commissions on newlineeducation. The extension of traditional forms of music education is the popular method, newlinewhich has been prevalent in Kerala for centuries. Nowadays, there has been a shift in newlinefocus on education that severely undermines the significance of music education among newlinestudents. It is a proven fact that quality music education is an important component for the newlineholistic development of the student community. The present study examines the current newlinestatus and problems of music education in Kerala at the school level. The study elaborates newlinethe factors that adversely affect music education through an in-depth analysis of primary newlinedata collected using scientific data collection tools and methods. The study seeks a newlinecomprehensive intervention from the government at various levels to revive music newlineeducation as an integral component of formal schooling. With this, music education can be newlineleveraged as a good medium for the overall growth and development of students. newline
