Abstract: The temporomandibular joint disorder was first defined by Hey et al. as a newlinelocalized mechanical fault interfering with the smooth functioning of a joint. newlineTemporomandibular joint pain is one of the distress symptoms which disturbs newlinedaily life. The majority of patients with disc displacements newlinehave no symptoms, but some patients with disc displacements may experience newlinepain and reduced mouth opening when the disc does not reduce to a normal newlineposition on opening. Pain and jaw limitation often affect daily life function, newlinepsychosocial well being and quality of newlinelife in TMD patients. Management of internal derangement of newlinetemporomandibular joints has generated worldwide controversies having arrived newlinewith no consensus. Minimally invasive methods such as arthrocentesis are newlineindicated when conservative management fails. newlineAIM newlineThis study is to compare the efficacy of duloxetine and amitriptyline in reducing newlinepostoperative pain following temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis. newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS newlineTwenty-two patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction indicated newlinefor minimally invasive procedures such as arthrocentesis, fitting the inclusion newlinecriteria, were included in the study. Group A patients have been treated with newline17 of138 newlineAmitriptyline 25 mg following arthrocentesis Group B patients have been treated newlinewith Duloxetine 20 mg following arthrocentesis.Post-operative pain, maximal newlineincisal opening and joint sounds have been evaluated. newlineRESULTS newlineThe mean age of group A (Amitriptyline) is 29.27, group B (Duloxetine) is 35.27 . newline27% of study subjects were male and 73% were female. newlineThe data were analyzed using a statistical package for windows [SPSS version newline21, Armonk, IBM Corp. USA]. The Shapiro-Wilk test for normality was applied newlineand data showing a skewed distribution were analyzed using a non-parametric newlinetest. Mean pain scores were analyzed using Mann Whitney U test and mean newlinemouth opening between the groups was compared using unpaired student t newlinetest. Categorical data was analyzed using the Chi-Square test
