Effectiveness of spiritual care training program on competence of nurses and its impact on wellbeing of their patients with cerebral stroke

Abstract

India is globally known for her spiritual heritage. Ancient health care newlinesystems have recognised the relationship of spirituality and health. Globally newlineapproved definition of health by World Health Organization has rightly pointed newlineout that spiritual wellbeing is an essential component of total wellbeing. newlineNurses are significant members of health team and can enhance spiritual newlinewellbeing of their patients if they are competent in providing spiritual care. newlineWell known definitions of nursing by nurse theorists like Florence Nightingale, newlineVirginia Henderson, Callista Roy, Ernest Wiedenbach have identified spiritual newlinecomponent of holistic care.The aim was to newlineevaluate the effectiveness of SCTP on competence of nurses in spiritual care newlineand its impact on spiritual well being of their patients with cerebral stroke in newlinethe selected setting.Results have revealed newlinethat the ten hours planned training program on spiritual care for nurses was newlineeffective in improving their spiritual care competence in all the six domains of newlinespiritual care namely attitude to patient spirituality, communication, newlineassessment and implementation of spiritual care, referral, personal support newlineand patient counseling, and professionalization and improving the quality of newlinespiritual care along with the significant difference in overall spiritual care newlinecompetence. A significant difference in spiritual well being was found in newlinepatients with stroke who were taken care by nurses who were competent in newlinespiritual care. Patients expressed a significant difference in their experience newlinerelated to nurses competence during their hospitalization before and after the newlinetraining program given to nurses. Competence in spiritual care which can be newlineincorporated into daily nursing care activities through adequate preparation of newlinenurses may have a long term implication on early recovery of patients and newlineautonomy of nurses. Nurses are uniquely positioned to serve as patient newlineadvocates and interdisciplinary leaders in holistic stroke recovery and newlinerehabilitation .
