Abstract: Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE) is the emerging trends in newly emerging scenario of software engineering. It provides new dimension to software development. CBSE is an approach which is making use of the reusable components. Reusable components are used in component Based Software Development (CBSD) to enhance the productivity, performance, efficiency of the software system. In a recent research the components are categorized in to various types as the Open Source Software (OSS) components, Commercial off the shelf (COTS) components and In-house components. For a large and complex application many number of components are playing a role in the development of the application. During the development of such applications, some of the components need to be developed separately specifically tailored to the need of application and some are selected from the third party repositories. Hence, CBSE is the technology supporting the software development and increasing the reusability functionality with the development of the component based software. newlineFrom the last twenty eight years as many number of metrics and technologies have arisen for making the CBSD process to be easier. But, due to the certain loopholes in those metrics and technologies there is a need for the new metrics. Thus, the paradigms of the CBSD encourage us to study, analyse the existing software metrics and to develop some of new modified metric and algorithm which helps in the enhancement of software development. newlineComponent selection is a very crucial process in the component based development environment. CBSD from the pool of components can be done in an efficient way by selecting the optimal components from the component repository. This thesis presents the modified metric named as Package Cohesion Component Complexity Metric (PC3M), algorithm for the optimal component selection from the component repository and a reusable process approach to select the optimal component set according to the client specific requirements.
