Abstract: | Aphthous stomatitis, also known as canker sores, are the most frequently newlineseen oral mucosal lesions globally. Aphthous stomatitis is a disease of unknown newlineetiology leading to significant injury characterized by one or several discrete, newlinemultiple recurrent small, round or ovoid painful ulcers with circumscribed newlinemargins, erythematous haloes, and yellow or grey floors often seen in childhood newlineor adolescence usually noticed in oral mucous membranes.There are several newlineetiological factors for the occurrence of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis( RAS) newlinewith the exact mechanism of the occurrence and recurrence still unknown. A newlineknown family history, food hypersensitivity, smoking cessation, psychological newlinestress, and immunological disruption have all been associated with the newlinedevelopment of this condition. newlineAim newlineTo correlate the protein levels levels of salivary cortisol , serum vitamin B newline1 2 and the genetic expression of proinflammatory cytokines inpatients with newlinerecurrent aphthous stomatitis and among healthy individuals newlineMethods newlineAn observational study was conducted among n = 40 patients in Saveetha newlineDental College and Hospitals. The patients were divided into 2 groups. newline10 newlineResult newlineSalivary cortisol was found to be elevated among RAS patients and there newlinewere lower levels of serum Vitamin B12 among RAS patients. It was found that newlinethere was a negative colletaion of these levels among RAS patient than in newlinecontrol.The genetic expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL1,IL6,TNF alpha ) newlineshowed higher expression than in control. newlineConclusion newlineIn our study we found out that there is negative correlation of serum vitamin B newline12 and salivary cortisol levels in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis newlinewhich signifies that the treatment for recurrent aphthous stomatitis could be newlineadministered by monitoring either of the levels. It was found that the newlineproinflammatory cytokines levels showed an increase in genetic expression and newlineTNF alpha showed slight increase in the genetic expression newline |
