Abstract: Homocysteine (Hcy) is a sulfur containing non-protein toxic amino acid newline(Glorieux, Schepers et al. 2008). This toxic metabolite is known to be synthesized newlinefrom methionine and acts as a midpoint between two pathways: remethylation to newlinemethionine, a reaction catalyzed by Methionine synthase (MS) and requires vitamin newlineB12 and folate; and transsulfuration to cystathionine, a reaction catalyzed by newlineCystathionine and#946;-synthase (CBS) and requires pyridoxal 5 -phosphate (Tchantchou newlineand Shea 2008). However, mutations or any defect in the Hcy metabolizing enzymes, newlinecause impairment in the Hcy detoxification resulting in an increased cellular and newlineplasma Hcy levels. This condition of elevated Hcy level in the blood is better known newlineas Hyperhomocysteinemia or Homocystinuria (Jakubowski 2004). newline
