Abstract: | Weeds are considered to be the most aggressive and undesirable elements of the newlineworld s vegetation. Weeds can cause an enormous reduction in crop yield and newlinewastage of resources. There are around 30,000 species of weeds which account for newline35% losses of wheat, 28% of vegetables, 29% of fruit species, and 37% in tobacco. newlineTo know the utilities of weeds, Amaranthus viridis L. and Euphorbia hirta L.were newlineselected for the present study. Amaranthus viridis L. grows annually as an erect, newlinemonoecious herb up to 100-300 cm tall and much-branched. About 18 genera and newlineover 50 species have been reported from India. Euphorbia is a small annual herb, newline15-50 cm high, and with white Latex. The plants range from large woody trees newlinethrough climbing lianas to simple weeds that grow prostrate to the ground and are newlineessentially tropical. For the experiments, Amaranthus and Euphorbia 4% fresh leaf newlineextracts, fresh leaf leachate, and dried leaf paste were used. Cicer seeds were newlinetreated with each extract and effect on germination, vegetative parameters, defense newlineenzymes as well as growth enzymes was checked. Types of biomolecules were newlineanalyzed in the extracts; quantitative estimation of phenolics and flavonoids in the newlineextracts was also done. The antifungal activity of extracts was checked on Fusarium newlinespecies and it controls the growth of the pathogen. Thus, the study indicates that newlineweeds Amaranthus viridis L. and Euphorbia hirta L.can be utilized for the various newlinebioactive components present in them, its growth-promoting activity, and also for newlineactivating defense in the pla newline |
