dc.description.abstractThe present dissertation is about the monitoring safety of drugs and quality of newlineprescribing practices, more specifically their surveillance after the regulatory newlineauthorities have judged their efficacy, quality, and safety sufficiently proven for the newlinedrugs to be applied in the clinical practice. After the thalidomide disaster in the early newline1960s the awareness that drugs can constitute. A serious risk was raised dramatically newlineand, in addition to stringent approval procedures, a scheme was developed to monitor newlinethe safety of marketed drugs. Pharmacovigilance is responsible for both the scheme s newlinetheoretical underpinning and its practical implementation. An implementation newlinepharmacovigilance method mainly relies on a (spontaneous) reporting system where newlinehealthcare professionals can report their suspicions of any adverse drug reactions newline(ADRs), which are subsequently analyzed. This thesis is about pharmacovigilance and newlinequality of prescribing practices, what it entails and how it can be improved. newline
