Educational problems of first generation learners and non first generation learners in relation to achievement motivation and home environment

Abstract

First generation learners form a group which is with great possibilities for future for themselves as well for a nation. For a nation the most valuable commodity is human capital. They are the generator of non-human capital. If not used properly they affect growth of a nation adversely. This is a transitional period in India with increasing number of first generation learner showing more interest in education. First generation learners are unused human resources in a country like India. From national point of view human resources means knowledge, skills, creative ability, talent and attitude possessed by the population which is still veiled in first generation learners. The present study aims to analyze the educational problems of FGL and NFGL in relation to Achievement Motivation and Home Environment. This research work adopted mixed method approach, which combines elements of qualitative and quantitative research approach. The concurrent Triangulation design is implemented that includes qualitative data taken from teachers and parents through interviews. At the same time quantitative data is collected from students by adopting standardized tools of respective variables. A Sample of 565 students was randomly selected from the schools to collect data. The final sample comprised of 282 first generations learners and 283 were non-first generation learners. The integrated results of the study lead to the conclusions that FGL and NFGL significantly vary on educational problems. FGLs have lack of educational facilities and support at homes Teachers are found aware of these issues and difference as well. The major finding shows the equal level of achievement motivation between both the groups i.e. FGL and NFGL. Teachers expect more involvement from parents to work in coordination for providing more conducive environment of study at home and educational guidance to FGL. This study would be helpful for policy makers and administrators to make policies for the upliftment of FGL. newline
