Abstract: | Drug-induced nephrotoxicity is an important cause of renal failure. Aminoglycosides are natural or semi-synthetic antibiotics with a heterocyclic structure formed by two or more amino sugars linked by glycoside bonds to an aminocyclitol ring. Perhaps the most widely used drug in this category is gentamycin. Apart from their beneficial effects, amino glycosides induce nephrotoxicity in 10-20% of therapeutic cases. Amino glycoside-induced nephrotoxicity has been characterised by tubular necrosis; basal membrane disruption; mesangial cell contraction, proliferation and apoptosis, indicated by decreases in glomerular filtration and alteration in intraglomerular dynamics newlineThe aim of the present study is to evaluate the nephroprotective action of root extracts of the Boerhaavia diffusa Linn. (Punarnava) on drug induced nephrotoxicity in male Wistar rats and to compare it with Vitamin-C and Vitamin-E. newlineThe findings of the study indicate that the extracts of Boerhaavia diffusa Linn.,possess nephroprotective activities as per biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. The findings of the study indicate that the extracts of 800mg/kg.bw Boerhaavia diffusa Linn., for 8wks and 200mg/kg.bw of Vitamin C + 250mg/kg.bw of Vitamin E for 8 wks posses significant nephroprotective activities. newline |
