Abstract: | main objective of this study is to develop an English for Specific Purposes newline(ESP) course to foster clinical communication skills among student nurses with newlinelimited English proficiency. Since nursing is a profession that highly relies on newlineeffective communication skills to carry out all its clinical activities, mastering good newlinespeaking skill brings out successful team work and health management. newlineCurrently, considering the professional opportunity in south India, the scope of newlinenursing, with local and overseas demands has attracted many takers from rural and newlineother medium schools. Due to disparity in English teaching learning experience newlineamong schools of India, when learners move to tertiary level from rural and other newlinemedium of learning they find it difficult to cope with the demands of their collegiate newlinelearning. These students are identified as students with Limited English Proficiency newline(LEP). newlineStudents with LEP generally lack good fluency to converse in English. With newlinethe underdeveloped speaking skill performing a good clinical communication is a newlinegreat challenge. Studies exploring the learning experiences of ESL student nurses in newlinewestern countries recommend bridge programmes that target learners specific needs. newlineTherefore the investigator has done a English language needs analysis among the newlinenursing graduates with limited language proficiency to identify a specific clinical newlinespeaking task that will need English language training. A survey was carried out newlineamong student nurses who were undergoing clinical experience to know their English newlineneeds. The survey identified the essentiality for language training to perform Oral newlineCase Presentation (OCP). newline |
