Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the malignancy of the newlinehepatocytes. It is the third leading cause of mortality due to the cancer newlineworldwide. Hepatocellular carcinoma ultimately leads to death within 6 newline 20 months of its first insult and its incidence is increasing worldwide newlineyear by year and in India too. It is evident from the literature that many newlinetropical plants possess interesting biological activities with potential newlinetherapeutic nature. Recent attention and the paradigm shift to natural newlineproducts has encouraged chemists, pharmacologists, biochemists and newlinemolecular biologists to combine their efforts in search for natural newlineagents that can limit reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated tumor newlineinjuries. newlineGarcinia mangostana Linn. is a tropical plant which is widely newlineseen in India, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. newlineThe pericarp of the Garcinia mangostana Linn is a waste product but it newlineis proven and well established by various researchers that the pericarp newlineof Mangosteen fruit is rich in xanthones, anthocyanins and oligomeric newlineproanthocyanidin. newlineThe extensive profile of the phytochemical constituents and newlinepharmacological effects of the bioactive xanthone components that are richly and widely distributed in the pericarp of the mangosteen made to newlinechoose pericarp extract of Garcinia mangostana Linn as the drug of newlinechoice. The pericarp extract of Garcinia mangostana Linn is effective, newlinenon toxic and its easy availability aroused more interest in the newlineselection of pericarp extract of Garcinia mangostana Linn for the newlineresearch study. In this study, it was hypothesized that pericarp extract of newlineGarcinia mangostana Linn may contain active constituents with potent newlineantioxidant and anticancer activities. Further research should help to newlineelucidate and extend the health benefits of mangosteen to a wider newlinepopulation. newline
