Abstract: The recent survey conducted by the International Diabetes Federation newlinereports that there is a massive increase in the prevalence of diabetes in the newlineSouth East Asian Region. It was observed that nearly 95% of the diabetics newlinewere diagnosed to have type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of type 1 diabetes newlinewhich was low in these regions is now becoming high. The proportion of pre newlinediabetics and the people with impaired glucose tolerance is also on a rising newlinescale. Asian Indian have a specific genotype which is prone for diabetes. The newlinerural and urban difference in the prevalence has also come down now newline(Ramachandran, 2013). Once, diabetes and hypertension were considered as newlinea disorder of rich people but now it affects almost all the categories of the newlinepeople. There are strong evidences that the unhealthy life style of people is newlineone of the most important risk factors. It was found that self- management training was effective in newlinemaintaining the physiological parameters within normal limits, promotion of newlinepsycho social parameters like wellbeing and QOL, decreasing the symptoms newlineof depression and reducing the indirect cost. It was also observed that there newlinewas a notable gain in the self-care practices of the study group after the newlineintervention. To manage the growing needs of the diabetic population it is newlineessential to understand the importance of self-management. It is essential to newlinehave a uniform region wise curriculum for diabetes self-management. The newlinehealth care professionals should be sensitized on the concept of selfmanagement. newlineThough the individuals are loaded with information it must be newlinemonitored that they receive the right and essential facts from the reliable newlinesource. The self management training should be imparted in the curriculum newlineof the undergraduate and post graduate courses of all health and allied newlinehealth courses. Effective implementation of the diabetic self-management will newlinereduce the occurrence of diabetes related complications. Ultimately the newlinecountry will have healthy productive individuals.
