Abstract: The law of contempt of court is basically intended to safe guard the impartial, respectful and upright judiciary. The study of the subject is of much practical importance in a democratic society, like India where freedom of speech is granted under Article 19(1) (a) of the constitution. To empower the authority to work without any discrimination or partiality, it is equally important that there should be no interference in the working of that authority except in emergency situation. The object of the contempt jurisdiction is to uphold the dignity of court. The image of such majesty in the minds of the public cannot be allowed to be distorted. newline
