Abstract: Soil contamination with the heavy metals more particularly with (Cr) is a newlinewidespread problem in chromite mine area. Microbial communities present in such newlinesoils provide useful information about any chemical and physical changes in the newlineenvironment and soil fertility status of that soil. The present investigation was made to newlinestudy functional diversity, genomics, 16S metagenomics and wholegenome newlinemetagenomics analysis of chromate resistance and reducing bacteria isolated from newlinechromate mine soil of Sukinda, Odisha. Besides, in silico prediction of enzyme-FFN newlineinteractions were undertaken to decipher the underlying mechanism of chromate newlinereduction. newlineFunctional diversity of microbial communities by BiologĀ® newline eco-plates method newlinewere studied and was correlated with soil organic carbon, microbial biomass and newlineactivities, under three different soil conditions such as in situ (mining quarry), newlineoverburden soil and forest soil adjacent to the mining site of Sukinda chromite mining newlinearea of Odisha, India during Aug 2016. The OC (Organic carbon), AN (Available newlinenitrogen), AP (Available phosphorus) and AK (Available potash) were significantly (P newlinelt 0.05) lower in in situ and overburden soils as compared to forest soil. The newlineutilization of six categories of carbon sources by soil microbes decreased with the newlineincrease in chromium load and biplot analysis suggested that carbohydrate, polymer newlineand amino acid utilizing microbes were dominant in mining soils. newline
