Abstract: | It is a commonplace of literary criticism to state that V. S. Naipaul has emerged as a newlinepowerful voice in the realm of fictional and non-fictional writings of commonwealth literature. newlineApart from producing a rich body of work both in fictional and non-fictional genre, Naipaul s newlinewritings, showing his strong conviction were bound to invite controversies of literary critics and newlinereviewers. However, Naipaul s expertise in vivid portrayal of his characters in his fictional works newlineand non-fictional writings can hardly be matched. This research work studies the representation of newlineIndia in Naipaul s non-fictions. It has been found that Naipaul s diasporic upbringing and his newlinesearch for a place that he could call his home gave rise to a peculiar response towards all societies newlinehe examined. It has been found that Naipaul, in his non-fictional writings, has written about India newlineor referred to India, a little bit more than he wrote about other countries. He also had some preconceived notions about India even before his first visit in 1962. Certain opinions were so fixed in newlinehis mind, some prejudices so deeply ingrained, that even after confronting the reality, Naipaul newlinecould not openly acknowledge the difference. Therefore, an attitude of ambivalence can be newlinemarked in his writings on India. newline |
