Abstract: The attempts to design new bi dentate Schiff base ligands, complexes and their utilization newlineare the main goals of this work. Details regarding the synthesis, spectral characterization newlineand applications of some new transition and non-transition metal complexes of the Schiff newlinebases derived from carbonyl and amines presented in this thesis. The Schiff base complexes newlineare synthesized by reflux method, in the presence of metal ions or by direct ligand synthesis newlinefollowed by complexation. This chapter presents an overview of the chemistry of metal newlinecomplexes and the application in Biology especially with regard to antimicrobial activity newlineThe scope of the present work and introduction is given in chapter 1. Literature survey and newlineReview of literature are presented in chapter 2. newlineChapter 3 deals with the details regarding the general reagents, experimental techniques newlinesynthesis of hydrazones, complexes and characterization. On comparing the infrared newlinespectrum of the ligand with that of the complexes, a shift in stretching frequencies of newlineazomethine (C=N), and carbonyl (C=O) is observed. The electronic spectral and magnetic newlinemoment studies of the complexes reveal an octahedral geometry for the Co(II) and Cu(II) newlinecomplex and square pyramidal geometry for Ni(II) complex, newlineThe synthesis and characterization of Valerophenone-m-anicicacidhydrazone, Cu and Zn newlinecomplexes are presented in chapter 4. The reactants are refluxed in 1:2 and 1;1 molar ratio. newlineThe complexes are non electrolytes in methanol. FTIR spectra indicate the bands due to MN newlineand M-O are present in complexes, while C=O stretching was found to be shifted, which newlineindicates the formation of the Schiff base complex. The 1H NMR spectrum confirms the newlineformation of ligand and complexes. The physicochemical and spectral data reveal a square newlineplanar geometry for the Cu (II) and Zn (II) complexes. newlineChapter 5 is a discussion on the synthesis and characterization of anthracene-9-carbal newlinedehyde-m-anicicacidhydrazone and its complex with cobalt.
