Abstract: | newline Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a clinical manifestation of the neuropsychiatric newlinecomplications like; cognitive and motor impairments, developed in the patients with the newlinecompromised liver functions. Liver dysfunction leads to elevated ammonia concentration in newlinethe systemic circulation which after diffusing through the blood brain barrier, accumulates in newlinethe brain to cause ammonia neurotoxicity. Therefore, the severity of HE varies with the newlinedegree of liver failure/damage. Accordingly, HE is categorized as acute and chronic types, newlinewith a range of moderate to minimal grade severity. The most common is the moderate grade newlineHE (MoHE) caused due to liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, alcoholism and drug intoxication which newlineare more prevalent in the general population. It is now evident that during prolonged liver newlinedysfunction, ammonia neurotoxic effects become irreversible and therefore, there is a need to newlinecharacterize cerebral mechanism based therapeutic intervention against HE. |
