Cyanobacteria are one the most evolutionarily ancient organisms that came into the existence on Earth in the Precambrian era. They have a cosmopolitan distribution and are the sole prokaryotes that possess the capabilities of oxygen-producing photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria are regarded as the ancestors of the plant chloroplast and considered as promising cell factories for an environmentally friendly production of chemicals and fuels. In addition, cyanobacteria constitute a rich source of secondary metabolites with established industrial, medicinal, economic, and ecological significance. Due to the relatively low growth requirements, high production per unit of area, and availability of tools for genetic modification and installation of novel features, these microorganisms have been demonstrated to be beneficial for the creation of food, biofertilizers, and biofuels newline
