Abstract: | Transit station and its immediate surroundings are related with respect to change in land use, increase in population density and growth of better infrastructure facilities. The developmental impact of Chennai Metro Rail Station on land use within its influence zone is evaluated for Chennai Metro Rail Corridor (CMRC) Phase 1 in Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). Influence zone of the transit station was identified as 800-meter radius surrounding the station as per National TOD Policy, and the parameters which influence the developments were classified as primary and secondary based on its importance recognized through the literature review. The metro stations which were operational during primary survey were ranked based on the identified parameters with the available secondary data. Three stations were randomly selected based on its ranking, i.e., 5th, 10th and 15th rank. A questionnaire survey was undertaken in the selected stations to identify the most important developmental change observed by the residents after the introduction of metro rail and its impact in their travel characteristics. Based on the survey, Change in land use and work related trips characteristics were chosen for the detailed study. In the selected stations, Land use survey was undertaken, for both before and after the introduction of metro rail, i.e., in 2006, 2014 and 2019 using CARTOSTAT I satellite image. Household survey was conducted to ii understand the mode of travel of the residents for work related trips in relation to their age, and the existing land use (single and mixed use). To prove once again that the change in land use observed in metro station influence zone is due to the impact of metro station, a non-metro area of similar character was identified within CMA, but at a distance of at least 5km away from the existing CMRC. The change in land use in transit station influence zone is found to be higher when compared with non-metro area of similar character. The observed change in land use is significantly higher closer to t |
