Abstract: In the developing as well as developed countries science plays a newlinemajor role in social welfare and empowerment Of all the media radio is an newlineeffective medium to reach the masses This is because even illiterates can use newlinethis medium especially in a developing country like India All India Radio newline AIR Community Radio CR Gyan Vani and private FMs Frequency newlineModulation make efforts in imparting scientific temper The present study newlineassesses the perceptions of the radio listeners about the potentiality of the newlineradio to provide science programmes in an effective way in the urban area newlineThe study explores the broadcasting intensity of the science programmes newlineacross radio stations operating in Chennai In the same lines effectiveness newlineand use of the programmes are examined The study also examines the newlineprospective use of radio in communicating the science programmes and the newlineextent that radio has made effective contribution to the public understanding newlineof science in the study area newlineSeveral studies illustrate the various dimensions of the science newlinecommunication process which enable to conceive the conceptualization of the newlinestudy Indian society has reached a complex socio economic and cultural newlinestage and has very limited space for science communication for public newlineunderstanding The media speak very little about the public understanding of newlinescience but believe that it will automatically grow over the years due to the newlinepublic interest in science newline newline
