dc.description.abstractv newlineABSTRACT newlineEuphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae) is a traditionally used medicinal plant for the treatment of newlinevarious diseases and ailments. Based on the available literature, the plant was selected for newlinescreening of in vitro anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative newlineactivities. In the present study standardization of the root extract of Euphorbia hirta Linn was newlinecarried out. Root extract was then subjected to in-vitro biological studies. To evaluate newlineantioxidant potential, DPPH radical scavenging assay, superoxide radical scavenging assay and newlinenitric oxide scavenging assay were performed. The scavenging effect of root extract of euphorbia newlinehirta on the DPPH radical was found to be 80.14% at a concentration of 50and#956;g/ml. The newlinepercentage inhibition of superoxide generation by 50 and#956;g/ml concentration of root extract was newlinemeasured as 70.93%. In Nitric oxide scavenging assay, extract at 50 and#956;g/ml concentration newlineproduced 51.08 percentage of inhibition. For anti-diabetic assay, at a concentration of 0.2 mg/ml, newlineroot extract of Euphorbia hirta have the inhibitory activity of 26.30% via alpha-amylase newlineinhibition assay and 28.21% via alpha-glucosidase inhibition assay respectively. In vitro antiinflammatory newlineactivity was screened by employing inhibition of protein denaturation method. For newlinethe results of this study, root extract showed significant inhibition of 66.20% at a concentration newlineof 1000 and#956;g/ml respectively. In addition, in vitro anti-proliferative potential was also studied. The newlineeffect of root extract of Euphorbia hirta on the growth of MCF - 7 cell lines was investigated by newlineMTT assay. The root extract exhibited a time and dose dependent activity and possesses good newlineanti-oxidant, anti-diabetic and moderate anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effect newline
